Climate measures in the pig barn

The climate footprint of pig production is mainly from the feed. The pig is not a ruminant and does not produce much methane as cattle do. Handling of fertilizer can mean a lot, both storage and spreading will affect the loss of nitrogen and the greenhouse gas nitrous oxide.

We have called one of the measures "better utilization and animal health". This can be achieved with measures in ordinary herds, but there is also a special program and system called SPF herds. There are strict requirements for pigs and buildings to be free from infection by certain diseases. Because of this, there must be a quarantine period with empty houses and this also has a cost.
